Change the Date
As Australians, we all want a day on which we can come together as a national community, to reflect on where we’re at and to celebrate what we are: a wonderfully diverse, open and free society. But January 26 is not that day.
The January 26 Australia Day remains for many Indigenous Australians a painful reminder of the invasion of their sovereign lands under the false pretence of terra nullius.
All Australians should have the right to participate in a meaningful national celebration that recognises the diverse Australia we live in today and the deep and ongoing connection to country by Indigenous Australians.
The Greens support the movement to change the date of Australia Day from January 26 to a new date that allows for meaningful and inclusive celebration by all Australians.
