Greens support NSW Aboriginal Land Council's calls for Treaty

Greens Aboriginal Affairs spokesperson, Dawn Walker has come out in strong support of the NSW Aboriginal Land Council's call for Treaty between the Government and the First Peoples of NSW today.

"The Greens support Aboriginal voices being at the centre when it comes to making laws and policy affecting our communities. At both the State and Federal level, we stand strong behind the call for treaties and the recent Uluru Statement from the Heart."

"The NSW Aboriginal Land Council has a long history of advocating for and representing Aboriginal people across NSW. The Treaty process is a chance to help heal the past and move towards an equal partnership to ensure that we do not continue in the sorry tradition of making laws and decisions for Indigenous communities.

“Both the Victorian and South Australian Governments are already in talks with Aboriginal people about state-based treaties - it’s time NSW did the same.

"The Greens congratulate the NSW Aboriginal Land Council on 40 years of Land Rights in NSW and on the launch of their Strategic Plan for the future" said Dawn Walker MP.
